Airport Runway Sweeping

Keeping Passengers and Employees Safe

Maintaining a clean and clear runway and the surrounding airfield is critical to the safe operation of any airport. Foreign object debris or “FOD” costs the aerospace industry $1.1-$2 billion per year, and that’s just indirect costs. Indirect costs from additional fuel expenses due to delays and aircraft changes cost ten times that amount, a whopping $12 billion per year.

But it’s not just the cost of this debris that can be devastating to an airport or airline. Foreign objects on runways can be dangerous, even deadly, to employees and passengers.

That’s why More Clean takes runway sweeping very seriously.

What kind of debris could be on a runway or near an airport?

With hundreds of flights landing and taking off every day from airports, there is always debris left behind. Factor in the dozens of employees who work on foot in and around the planes and you have a high probability that debris will be left behind. Weather can also play a role in debris, especially in Texas, where the weather can be quite severe.

Foreign objects are the most common debris left on runways. This includes a variety of materials such as loose runway material, rubber, rocks, and more, which can cause damage to equipment or airport personnel.

What type of equipment do we use?

At More Clean, we use commercial-grade runway cleaning machines that utilize powerful sweepers designed for different purposes. These cleaning machines are specifically designed to keep landing strips free of foreign objects.

Our heavy-duty sweeper trucks are the best in the industry and customized to fit your airport’s needs. Our fleet includes regenerative air sweepers and mechanical broom sweepers to remove unwanted debris. And each sweeper is uniquely designed, depending on the surface and type of debris.

Mechanical broom sweepers focus on removing rubber deposits often left by tires of planes that use the runways. They use rubber brooms that help to pick up the debris and then place it into a sweeper bucket.

To remove foreign objects, regenerative air sweepers are used on paved surfaces. These sweepers pick up rocks and other materials.
